Indoor Shooting

As novices your first experience of archery with ULAC will be indoors. Apart from a brief foray into the chill around December for the Frostbite, we stay in the warm and dry until around March. The indoor rounds for ULAC are shot at 20yards but other competitions rounds are shot elsewhere. Below is a brief outline of the common indoor rounds, the Portsmouth and Worcester are of most interest at this point. The Portsmouth is the most significant, and the round most practiced: this is the round you will shoot at BUCS Indoor.

Sunday

Seniors and novices with their own/rented equipment
4.00pm - 6.00pm

The hall is for our exclusive use, no other clubs use it at that time but we do give up one target for the use of a beginner's course. Often there will have been a session directly before ours and set up is not required. This session is often used to shoot a formal round (for the E-League or Worcester League), either a Portsmouth or a Worcester. Arrows are shot in ends of three, five or six depending on the round. Information will be given at the session. If you arrive in good time you can set up in the reception area.

All students interested in giving Archery a go are welcome to these sessions. Equipment is provided so all you need to do is turn up!

The sessions are ideal for novices and beginners to improve their technique. Senior members of the club are also present at the hall and happy to offer guidance.

Caxton House Community Centre

Monday and Friday

Seniors only

6.00pm - 9.00pm

The hall is shared with archers from several other clubs including Hampstead Bowmen and Aquarius. This is an opportunity to meet people from clubs outside of the university circuit. The archers are all very friendly, get to know them. Arrows are shot in ends of six and the standard round is a Portsmouth, although you do not have to score every session. As with Sundays, if you arrive in good time you can set up in the reception area. This venue can become crowded, especially at the start of the indoor season. There may be 3 details on each target and space for your equipment will be limited. Be careful of other people's bows, it is all too easy to kick them in passing.

ULAC Indoor League

The ULAC league is an internal competition designed to help motivate archers to improve their scores. Your best Porstmouth score for each leg, September/October, November, December/January, February, and March, contributes to your standing in the ULAC league. The results from this league are used to calculate the handicap champion at the end of each indoor season. The current ULAC league can be found here

Indoor Rounds and their Rules

Portsmouth

The round consists of 60 arrows shot in ends of 3 at a 60cm target at 20yards. 6 'sighter' arrows are allowed before scoring begins. The ends may be timed. Any 'bouncers', arrows which bounce or fall out of the target, may be reshot. Number of hits and golds are recorded. Our most popular indoor round; the round we shoot at BUCS.

Worcester

60 arrows in ends of 5 shot at a Worcester target at 20yards. The Worcester target is black with the number rings divided by a white circle. 5 sighters are allowed before scoring begins. Hits and golds are recorded. The round is untimed and bouncers may be reshot. The round we shoot in the Middlesex Worcester competition.

WA 18

60 arrows shot at a 40cm target at 18 metres in ends of 3. Unlimited practice is allowed before scoring, in reality this will usually be around 3 ends of 6-8 arrows. Holes in the target must be marked as any bouncers are scored using the empty hole. 10s and 9s are recorded.

Bray 1

30 arrows in ends of 3 shot at a 40cm target at 20yards. Practice unlimited as WA18. Hits and golds are recorded and bouncers are scored on the unmarked hole.

Exception - Worcester

The Rules of Target Archery - Indoor shall apply except for the following:

  • Rotating details will not apply to this round.

  • In the event of an archer shooting more than five arrows at an end the archer shall be penalised by losing the value of his highest scoring arrow(s) in the target.

  • The maximum number of archers on a target boss shall be four.

  • Four minutes shall be the maximum time for an archer to shoot an end, the time to start from when the archer steps on to the shooting line.

  • The scoring points for hits on the target face are: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, reading from the centre white circle.

  • Two archers of a group shall shoot five arrows; the second group shall then shoot their five arrows.

  • The first group of two archers shall shoot at the higher targets; the second group at the lower targets.
